RCMSAR

Objective

To develop a volunteer training resource that supports inclusive communication, leadership, and team dynamics within RCMSAR—enhancing engagement, safety, and collaboration across a diverse volunteer base. RCMSAR is a volunteer-based search and rescue organization serving coastal British Columbia. Our team was engaged through a BCIT consulting practicum to create an interactive and engaging training module to support leadership and crew development in a way that was accessible, practical, and culturally sensitive.

Creative Process

1. Research: We conducted interviews with RCMSAR volunteers and leadership across multiple units to understand their operational culture, communication dynamics, and key leadership challenges.

2. Framework Development: We developed a multi-module training program addressing unconscious bias, emotional intelligence, inclusive leadership, and team communication—tailored for a safety-critical, volunteer-driven setting.

3. Scriptwriting: I wrote concise, engaging voiceover scripts for each slide, balancing clarity, empathy, and practicality while avoiding defensive language often associated with DEI.

4. Design & Guides: We created a clean, modular slide design on canva accompanied by a printed reference guide that units could refer to offline.

5. Finalization: We presented the completed training package to RCMSAR’s leadership team, receiving positive feedback and alignment for gradual rollout.

Results

The training module was praised for its clarity, practicality, and cultural sensitivity. It was recognized by the client for its value in supporting inclusive leadership and team dynamics across RCMSAR’s volunteer network.

By combining deep listening, thoughtful communication strategy, and accessible instructional design, we delivered a meaningful training solution that equips RCMSAR volunteers with practical tools for inclusive leadership and stronger team collaboration.
